Cold-weather concrete: the ACI 306 numbers, and the 5 AM call they force

Every winter pour is really two problems wearing one coat. The first is chemistry — concrete below a certain temperature stops gaining strength, and concrete that freezes young is ruined in a way no cure can fix. That problem has been solved on paper since ACI 306 was written; the numbers are known and they don’t negotiate. The second problem is the one the spec can’t help you with: it’s 5 AM, the forecast moved, the trucks load in three hours, and somebody has to decide. This guide covers both — the numbers first, then the call.

Where cold weather officially starts

ACI 306 draws the line at 40°F: cold-weather concreting practice applies when the air temperature has fallen to — or is expected to fall to — 40°F or below during the protection period, the days after placement when the concrete still needs help holding its temperature. That “expected to” matters more than people give it credit for. The question is never “is it cold right now.” A 48°F morning with a 25°F night behind it is a cold-weather pour, because the concrete will still be young and vulnerable when the cold arrives. You’re not planning for the temperature at the chute — you’re planning for every night between placement and the day the concrete can take care of itself.

The numbers to plan around

  • Concrete temperature, not air temperature, is the governing number. For typical flatwork and walls, ACI 306 wants concrete placed no colder than about 55°F, which means it leaves the plant warmer — around 65°F on a freezing morning, made with heated water and warmed aggregate. Thicker sections get a little more grace because their own heat of hydration works for them. Order the winter mix from the plant; don’t try to manufacture warmth on site.
  • 500 psi is the survival line. Concrete that has reached about 500 psi of compressive strength can take one freezing cycle without damage. Before that, freezing water expands inside the paste and the strength it destroys never comes back. Everything about protection — blankets, enclosures, duration — exists to carry the pour from the chute to 500 psi without a freeze.
  • Never pour on frozen ground. Frozen subgrade settles when it thaws and takes the slab with it, and it drains heat out of the bottom of the placement all day. Ice and snow in the forms are the same story. Thaw and insulate the ground before pour day, or move the pour.
  • Everything the concrete touches should be above freezing. Forms, rebar mats, embeds, the subgrade — cold steel and frozen wood pull heat exactly where you can least afford to lose it.
  • Accelerators are a spec conversation, not a default. A non-chloride accelerator (or an extra sack of cement) buys back set time honestly. Calcium chloride is cheaper and works — but many specs cap or ban it around reinforcing steel, and it can mottle exposed finishes. Ask before the plant batches it, not after the inspector does.

The exact placement temperatures and protection durations by section size live in ACI 306’s tables, and your project spec may run tighter than any of them. When the two disagree, the spec wins.

Cold rewrites the pour-day clock

Summer concrete punishes you for being slow; winter concrete punishes you for being late. The rule of thumb is that every 20°F drop in concrete temperature roughly doubles the set time — so the slab that took your finishers four hours to close in May takes most of a December day. Bleed water sits longer. The machine work starts later. And the finish window now runs into a 4:30 sunset with the temperature falling through it.

That’s a scheduling fact, not a chemistry footnote. Cold-weather pours start early, run tighter truck spacing than the summer habit, and never get scheduled as the afternoon’s second pour. It’s the same coordination discipline as the 90-minute window, run in the other direction: hot weather steals working time from the mix, cold weather steals it from the day.

Protection is a plan, not a pile of blankets

Whatever carries the pour to 500 psi has to be decided — and on site — before the first truck loads. The pieces are simple:

  • Insulating blankets, with doubled attention at edges and corners — they lose heat from two faces and freeze first.
  • Enclosures and heaters where blankets aren’t enough — and if the heater burns fuel, it gets vented. An unvented salamander in a sealed enclosure is a carbon-monoxide problem for the crew and a carbonation problem for the slab: the exhaust reacts with the green surface and leaves it soft and dusting. Both are discovered too late.
  • A thermometer under the blanket, not a guess. A min-max thermometer or a sensor tells you the protection worked; the alternative is finding out in the spring.
  • A gentle ending. When protection comes off, taper it. Stripping warm concrete straight into a 15°F morning thermal-shocks the surface, and the cracks it opens were paid for by everything you did right up to that point.

The go/no-go call

Here is the part ACI doesn’t cover. The forecast that matters isn’t today’s — it’s the pour day plus the whole protection period, at the jobsite, not the metro area. Five questions settle it:

  • Do the overnight lows through the protection period stay inside what your blankets and heaters can actually hold?
  • Is the subgrade thawed — and staying thawed?
  • Is the protection physically on site right now, not promised?
  • Does the finish window fit the daylight, with the slower set figured in?
  • If the answer changes at 5 AM, does everyone rolling toward the pour find out in time?

That last question is the one that decides whether the others get answered honestly. No software warms concrete — nothing on a screen moves a single BTU. But when canceling a pour costs an hour of phone calls to the plant, the pump, the GC’s super, and nine crew phones, people start gambling with marginal mornings, because the cancel itself is painful. A pour schedule that lives in a spreadsheet and a group text makes the wrong decision the easy one.

What is the coldest temperature you can pour concrete?
There is no single air temperature that ends the season. ACI 306 draws its line at 40°F — below that, cold-weather practice applies — but the number that actually governs is the temperature of the concrete, not the air. Keep the mix warm out of the plant (about 65°F on a freezing day), get it placed no colder than roughly 55°F, protect it afterward, and subs pour through air temperatures well below freezing all winter. What you can’t do is pour warm concrete and walk away from it in the cold.
Can you pour concrete on frozen ground?
No. Frozen subgrade settles when it thaws, and a slab that followed it down is cracked for good. Frozen ground also pulls heat out of the bottom of the placement faster than blankets can put it back on top. Thaw the ground first — ground heaters, insulated blankets ahead of pour day — or wait. Pouring on ice or snow is the same answer.
How long does concrete need to be protected after a cold-weather pour?
Until it can take a freeze. The working threshold is about 500 psi of compressive strength — concrete at 500 psi survives one freezing cycle without damage. With a winter mix and accelerators that’s commonly one to four days of protection; a plain mix in real cold needs longer. Does concrete cure in the winter?
Yes — slower. Hydration is a chemical reaction, and the rule of thumb is that every 20°F drop in concrete temperature roughly doubles the setting time. Kept warm under protection, winter concrete keeps gaining strength like it’s spring.
When should a concrete sub cancel a cold-weather pour?
When the forecast through the protection period beats what you can protect against: overnight lows past what your blankets and heaters can hold, subgrade still frozen at 6 AM, protection not actually on site, or a finish window that runs past dark into falling temperatures. The discipline is making that call early and making it cheap — a cancel that takes one click and notifies everyone beats a gamble with a full pour of concrete.
